Well this past summer was a killer show and this AC show was unreal. SIX Zeppelin songs. Just check out this short video and you’ll see the energy of the crowd which is why I couldn’t take anymore footage. Enjoy!

As the late, great Jerry Garcia said, “Summer time’s come and gone my oh my.” And this summer went fast. I hit a few shows though, both local and national acts, and the results were mixed. I’m gonna start in the spring.

March – Blues Traveler

Yeah I folded and thought that they would be good. I’ve been seeing them ever since the Horde Festival way back in the early 90′s and remembered that they sucked live. Well 2009 was no exception. What a bore. Next time just play your first album all the way through and Hook as the encore and get a new guitar player and it will rock!

March – The Allman Brothers Band

I have a yearly tradition of going to The Beacon in NYC to see the Allmans and this year I headed up with Laura. Had a great dinner at Neo before the show BTW. Of course I missed Eric Clapton play with them the night before, but got to catch a great show as usual with a Bruce Hornsby guest appearance. The Allmans bring me back to college and The Beacon is the best place to see them. Plus, Warren Haynes is one of my all time favorite guitar players – only with the Allmans. I discussed Warren in the post – Warren Haynes Is Better With The Allman Brothers. Click here to see some video I took at the show.

June – Santana

Surprisingly, Santana was one of the best shows I saw all summer. I saw him in Vegas at the Hard Rock and was not expecting much. I guess that’s part of it – not expecting much. Sat in the 3rd row center and I have to say that Carlos delivered. Sure he played his hits and scattered a few new tunes in the set. But guess what? I wanted to hear him rip Oye Como Va, and he also did this killer version of Soul Sacrifice.

July – The Bridge

These guys are an up and coming band in Baltimore. I hope they make it because they are very talented and good guys. I had a great time at the show. Click here to see my band jamming out with lead guitarist from The Bridge, Cris Jacobs.

August – Phish

I’ve been seeing Phish for a long time and was pumped to have 2nd row at this show. I used to see them in small venues back in the early 90′s and as soon as they started playing bigger venues, I did not enjoy it as much. The show at Merriweather Post Pavillion was the one show that had a terrible setlist. The shows before and after had all the great songs that I love, so part of the blame was timing. Click here to see a funky jam I recorded, but overall, not the best show. Could I have gotten just one YEM, Stash, Golgi, Cavern, Suzy Greenberg, Chalkdust or any of the other fifty songs I like? Oh well.

August – The Black Crowes

I’ve seen the Crowes five times now. The first time in Atlanta 1991, then at a small bar in Baltimore called Bohager’s which was a great show, in Atlantic City at The Borgata, in Philadelphia with Jimmy Page, (which was one the best shows I have ever seen from any band – all Zepplin) and this last show at the Ram’s Head in Baltimore. This last show was sooo boring. All new stuff that I guess is on their new album, (that they recorded at Levon Helm’s farm) but it was slow. And of course The Ram’s Head oversold the show so you couldn’t even see them. It also didn’t help that Chris Robinson was a jerk on stage. He was the same way at Bohager’s but a least they played a great show. Hey Chris, big deal, you married Kate Hudson – she realized what a schmuck you are and got rid of you – good move Kate! Your brother’s Rich’s hot wife dumped him too and took his money. Maybe they’ll sell their diamonds to me through DivorceYourDiamond.com.

I saw a theme at these shows. All the bands that I loved so much in college went through (and are going through) the same trip. They were new and fresh and hungry when they first came out on the scene. Then they got sick of each other, got older, and went on to do solo stuff. Trey, Mike and Paige from Phish did it and so did Chris and Rich Robinson from The Black Crowes. Well, they didn’t make any coin from their solo careers, so they got back together to go on tour and make a new album to earn some money. At their live shows, they play all the new stuff and very little of the old beacause they’re sick of it, but the crowd wants to hear the old tunes. Because that’s what brings them back to a good time in their life and that’s what is familiar. Only music can give you that feeling. It’s like when I hear a Journey song and get that nervous feeling in my stomach that I had to ask a girl to slow dance. Now, I don’t expect them never to create new music. As an artist, that’s what it’s about. But when you’re paying $50 or more a ticket, maybe the band shouldn’t be so selfish and play some crowd pleasers and covers. Take it from Carlos Santana – it’s NOT all about them! Look, on a much much smaller scale, when my band Heller Highwater is practicing for a gig and we jam a tune that is fun, we nix it sometimes. Why? Because we say to ourselves. “Is anyone really gonna want to listen to this?” If the answer is no, then we don’t play it live. Maybe these guys who do this for a living should think the same way…

I am getting so psyched to see one of my favorite bands, The Allman Brothers, at The Beacon Theatre in NYC tomorrow night. I usually go every year and meet up with my boys from college, but this year I’m taking the wife for my 10 year anniversary. Wow, time flies. Well, I’m a happy guy, can’t say that I wouldn’t want my wife to give me what Larry David’s wife offered him for his 10 year, but I don’t think that’s happening yet. So check out what The Allmans and The Beacon are all about. Here they are playing with with Buddy Guy and Phish last week. I’m missing Clapton tonight, but I’m hoping they’ll have a great guest star up there tomorrow. Enjoy – I know I will!

So Phish is reuniting in Hampton, VA this weekend. I used to see Phish back in college – first in 1990 at The Bayou in DC (which has since closed) and then at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Both very small venues. In Atlanta, you could walk right up to Fishman and then walk back to your seat no problem. Then I saw them at the Capital Center in ’96 and that was my last show. I didn’t like them in a bigger venue and the crowd was not that cool – at least not like a Dead Show, which is where my heart is. Well, I hope my phriends have a great time this weekend anyway. I would see them if I could fly in on a helicopter, sit backstage and then be home in bed before 12 – but I am an old man. Either way Trey rips. Check him out here playing AC/DC Bag. That’s my call for the opener – you heard it here first. Why is that song called AC/DC BAG? Cause that’s the cords – A C D C B A G… – but I have been corrected – it A C D C F A G – but I guess it wouldn’t be very PC so we’ll keep on the DL

It’s been a while since I posted, but that’s a good thing because we are busy selling (and buying) diamonds. Now is the time. We have a lot of items on sale, and we are making some great jewelry buys from customers coming in to our store, and from all over the country. We are also writing posts on our company blog about social media and other cool stuff so check it out.

Today, platinum closed at almost the same level as gold. For a while it was trading BELOW gold. Platinum has dropped 64% from a record in March, while gold has dropped 21%. Platinum closed $1.60 an ounce above gold in New York, the smallest spread since at least 1996. Actually, it is used more in cars than in jewelry, which is why it’s down so much.

“When platinum trades at the same value or lower than gold, it is screaming recession,” said Leonard Kaplan, the president of Prospector Asset Management in Evanston, Illinois. “It’s another confirmation that we’re in a deflationary recession, where everything goes down. Who’s going to buy cars in a recession?”

Doesn’t hurt me, but it’s gotta hurt those “luxury” jewelry lines who charge an arm and a leg (even to the jeweler) for their stuff. For the consumer, it’s a good thing.

In the diamond world, check out this big blue diamond that Lawrence Graff just bought at the last Christie’s sale – diamonds are still strong.

The 35.56-carat blue Wittelsbach diamond, which sold for $24.3 million at Christie

Here is the article from National Jewelers Network:

“London: A 35.56-carat blue diamond broke through the financial gloom on Wednesday, setting a new world record price for a diamond sold at auction.

The deep grayish-blue gem, known as the Wittelsbach Diamond, sold for $24.3 million at Christie’s “Jewels: The London Sale,” topping the previous record of $16.5 million set by the sale of a 100-carat diamond in Geneva in 1995.

International jeweler Laurence Graff, of Graff Diamonds, snapped up the gem, outbidding Aleks Paul of Essex Global Trading, a professional of Russian origin based in New York.

The sale also sets a new world record price for any jewel sold at auction.

Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie’s Europe and auctioneer for the sale, said, “In the midst of these challenging times, we were thrilled to achieve a historic price for a historic diamond.”

Officially known as “Der Blaue Wittelsbacher,” the roots of this stone can be traced back to the 17th century.

In 1664, King Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665) included the diamond as part of the dowry of his daughter, Infanta Margarita Teresa (1651-1673), when she became engaged to Leopold I of Austria (1640-1705), a man who later became the Holy Roman Emperor.

The diamond subsequently became part of the Austrian and then the Bavarian crown jewels.

It has been part of a private collection since 1964; Wednesday marked its first offering to the international market in nearly 80 years.”

So buy diamonds! You will be ok, it’s the best investment out there. Contact me to invest in diamonds.

And check out these KIDS who play “You Enjoy Myself” by Phish. They are in MIDDLE SCHOOL – WOW!!

Warren Haynes in my opinion is one of the best out there. I wrote about him earlier and posted a video of him playing with Trey from Phish. So I was really stoked to see Warren Haynes with Gov’t Mule last week. I have been watching him with The Allman Brothers Band for a long time – especially when I was in college in Hotlanta. Saw Mule a while ago and thought that I liked him with the Allmans better, but I went anyway cause it’s been a while. Well, I have to say again, much better with the Allmans. Too much slow, dragged out stuff. He rips but this is the stuff I like to see – especially at The Beacon. Check out Warren trading licks with Derek Trucks:

Don’t get much better than that – I’m in NYC when they’re back (hopefully soon)…
